Sample Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Miami:

Your Top Tier Cuba travel experience begins in Miami with a reception and briefing at the Sheraton Miami Airport Hotel where you will meet your Cartan Trip Director and the members of your small group. Following the reception, a welcome dinner will be enjoyed at a local Cuban Restaurant.

Day 2- Miami/Havana:

After breakfast, your Cuba travel begins as your group boards an included charter flight to Havana’s Jose Marti International airport, where your local Cuban guide greets your group. The drive from the airport orientates you with Cuba’s capital city, Habana Vieja (Old Havana) is home to one of the largest collections of Spanish-Colonial architecture in the Americas. Following lunch, check in at the Melia Cohiba Hotel with a welcome drink awaiting you. Tonight, dinner will be at a local restaurant.

Day 3Havana & Pinar del Rio:

Today’s Cuba travel focuses on the transformative effects of art on Cuba life with a visit to Las Terrazas, a self-sustained artist community. Following lunch, visit a coffee plantation to meet with farmers and their families to talk about Cuban agricultural business. Upon returning to Havana, stop at Casa Fuster to interact with the artist and visit the neighborhood of Jaimanitas that includes more than 80 uniquely decorated houses, a chess park and other public artworks. You have the opportunity to choose a restaurant on your own tonight.

Day 4Havana:

Following breakfast at your hotel, visit a community center for the elderly and interact with nuns and participants to learn about their various projects. Our next People to People activity will have us meeting an Architect of the Historian’s office to discuss Havana’s restoration and architectural grandeur during a walk through Old Havana. After a lovely lunch we will visit the expansive San Jose Market to interact with artists and vendors of handicrafts. Today visit Casa de la Cultura, a local community center that teaches classes to their local neighborhood in the arts. Prior to dinner, we will have a discussion on U.S./Cuba policy with a questionand answer period at the hotel. Dinner tonight will be at a local paladar, a privately owned restaurant.

Day 5- Havana:

We are headed to the Botanical Gardens today for a discussion on the importance and significance of this beautiful area. Following the Botanical Gardens is a visit to a local day care center operated by nuns in the Parraga suburb of Havana. Meet and interact with the children who are as curious about us as we are of them! Lunch today will be at a local paladar where the owners have their own organic urban farm. Learn about their private enterprise and the importance of urban farms. This afternoon visit the University of Havana to interact with students and listen to a lecture given by a university professor. This evening you will enjoy a performance by the Cuban Institute of Music with traditional Cuban music including interactive discussions about styles and instruments. Dinner this evening will be at the Melia Cohiba Hotel. You may like to experience the cabaret style show at the Havana Cafe’, located in the hotel after dinner tonight.

Day 6- Havana/Santa Clara:

Depart Havana for the best known of Cuba’s wildlife havens, the Zapata peninsula, where you will visit the small village of Caleton at the bottom of the bay at Playa Larga. A
discussion will be given on the Cienaga de Zapata National Park and its protected area. Lunch will be at a private house where family owners can give an indepth view of owning a private business in Cuba, the challenges and its benefits. Before departing for Santa Clara you will visit the Bay of Pigs museum and learn about the blockade. Dinner at a local paladar is included tonight.

Day 7- Santa Clara/Trinidad/Cienfuegos:

As you journey to Trinidad, sugar cane fields give way to an urban area where modest red-tiled residences are mixed with Colonial mansions and museums. We make our first
stop at a ceramic studio for a hands-on pottery demonstration and discussion with the family. Next, we take a walking tour of Trinidad to experience the history and culture of the area. Visit a Rationing store and learn about shopping in Cuba from the local guide. We have time to enjoy the beautiful Placio Cantero before our lunch stop at Manaca Iznaga, a former sugar factory and estate where we will learn about sugar production and its importance to the Cuban economy. On our return to Santa Clara we stop at the vibrant city of Cienfuegos. We will have a walking tour that includes the food market, artist vendors, and more. Dinner will be served at our hotel tonight.

Day 8- Santa Clara & Caibarien:

After breakfast your group will walk through the city of Santa Clara with a local guide and learn about shopping in Cuba by talking with local shop owners of private enterprises. Next, visit a community center for the elderly and learn about their different activities, followed by a visit to Che Guevara Memorial. After lunch, we drive to Caibarien and meet with a local artist, as well as visit an old print shop in town and interact with staff. Our final activity for the day will be taking a steam train to a sugar plantation museum. We return to Santa Clara for our farewell dinner at a local paladar.

Day 9- Santa Clara/Miami:
